Full-Time Special Needs Teacher

Saint Pius X Catholic School in Greensboro, North Carolina, is seeking a dynamic, innovative, thoughtful and caring Special Needs teacher for the 2019-2020 school year.  Degree in Special Education, and certification in at least one area of learning disabilities as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction is required.  A minimum of five years successful teaching experience is preferred.

The Special Needs Teacher at Saint Pius X is a teacher who provides support to students, teachers, and parents to ensure that students receive a quality education by meeting the student’s unique learning needs. This important work involves developing the Student Accommodation Plan (SAP) and implementing the plan in classroom settings, compatible with the student’s age and developmental level.  The Special Needs teacher is responsible for creating lesson plans, adapting materials and designing activities to assist students in their growth and development with appropriate academic, behavioral, and social skills and to meet their SAP goals.  The teacher is responsible for monitoring student’s progress and for maintaining student records in compliance with Diocese of Charlotte policies, as well as state and federal guidelines.

Essential functions of the job may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Works with colleagues in providing support to teachers in meeting the learning needs of struggling students by sharing research-based instructional intervention strategies to overcome learning difficulties.
  • Conducts special education evaluations and reevaluations. Assesses student progress and determines the need for additional reinforcement or adjustments to instructional techniques, and keeps careful records of assessment data.
  • Schedules team meetings and works cooperatively with child study team members and others in developing instructional goals and strategies.
  • Coordinates the delivery of special education services in each student's SAP.
  • Creates a positive learning experience with emphasis in individualized instruction using appropriate resources, including the use of technology.
  • Serves as primary contact for the parent/s.
  • Provides direction, supervision and evaluation of educational assistants as directed.
  • Maintains a confidential student file for each student who receives services or who has been identified as possibly necessitating support.
  • Consistently and professionally communicates with parents and staff regarding student performance by phone, email, in-person conferences, regular newsletters, and through progress reports and report cards.
  • Coordinates with classroom teachers in the completion of progress reports and report cards.
  • Assists parents in making referrals to local professionals and agencies.
  • Monitors student progress in the regular education classroom by consulting regularly with the classroom teacher.
  • Assists with standardized testing and the coordination of testing accommodations.
  • Assists with any other duties as requested by administration.
  • Coordinates Title I and ESL services for students.
  • Other functions of the job include but are not limited to the following:
  • Establishes and maintains student control and discipline in the classroom, school premises or during school activities.
  • Employs and implements a classroom structure and consistency to encourage student responsibility, cooperation and mutual respect consistent with district policies and procedures.
  • Collaborates and consults with educational professionals and community service providers (i.e., social services, public health, medical providers etc.) regarding the needs of students.
  • Provides consultation to classroom teachers regarding classroom adaptions, instructional modifications, adaptive equipment, behavior modification plans and other similar instructional interventions to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
  • Performs other comparable duties of a like or similar nature apparent or as assigned.
  • Possesses the ability to deliver and articulate oral presentations and written reports.
  • Possesses the ability to effectively and analyze needs and problems objectively.
  • Possesses the ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with children, students, parents, staff, administration and the general public.
  • Possesses knowledge of relevant technology including the use of technology such as i-pads to individualize.
  • Communication of a genuine comfort and excitement about working with children from diverse backgrounds.
  • Display of excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Attendance and participation at open houses, school plays, arts showcases, and similar events.
  • Participation in school committee work and other school endeavors.
  • Active monitoring of students during recess, and other duties as assigned.

Instructional Assistant

Qualifications    The Instructional Assistant at Saint Pius X provides support to students and teachers. This important work involves assisting with academics and behavioral problems as directed by the classroom teacher, assisting with small group activities, maintaining confidential records, and performing carpool, playground, and lunch supervisory duties. Instructional Assistants must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and to work cooperatively with a variety of individuals and groups. They must relate well to children and their families, be able to exercise sound judgment, and maintain a positive approach to their work. They assist with general housekeeping and clerical responsibilities and perform other duties as needed.

Successful prior experience is preferred.
